Tall Stories’ imaginative staging of Julia Donaldson’s picture book is a pleasure. It’s ingenious, nattily staged, and like the little snail at the heart of the story has big ambitions and wide horizons. Very nice.
An imaginative and heartfelt adaptation★★★★
An exquisite piece of theatre
From curious props to exciting adventures, The Snail and the Whale is stunning, heartbreaking and incredibly clever indeed.
Delightful, funny and imaginative
Whilst other shows may just provide a nice little story, this has a number of layers to it and is a great way for young minds to explore a range of concepts. It takes Julia Donaldson's delightful story... and adds to it to make it even better.
By the end of the hour we’ve ridden an enormous wave of story-telling and are hungry for more tales, more adventure, more fun and more precious time with our little ones before they grow up.

The trio on stage kept the young audience listening with rapt attention and giggling or joining in.
Childish shrieks of delight and gleeful singing provide a constant vocal accompaniment to The Snail and the Whale.
The Snail and the Whale was superb. The kids gaffawed like loons at the slapstick while simultaneously the adults quietly sobbed at the melancholy subtext. Clever, fun and touching.

Hi, we have just seen Snail and the Whale at Hereford, it was FANTASTIC. My 4 yr old twins loved it. This is the first performance they have been to, my son has autism and he managed to stay until right near the end. We have been singing ‘shooting stars, crashing waves’ all afternoon.

As usual Tall Stories never fail to be inventive, imaginative and captivating on lots of different levels. My little girl who is 7 loved the sense of play; the use of live music and the secondary story line. A compelling performance to watch as an adult too.

Thank you for a beautiful interpretation of a story that means a lot to my family. My husband is in the Royal Air Force and this is the story he chose to tell on his Storybook wings CD for our two daughters. We all enjoyed the show, although I did shed a few tears as the heartache of saying goodbye was very close to home. My daughters loved it all.

I’m sorry but I just had to write to you. I have just taken my two children to see The Snail and the Whale. It was simply beautiful! I wish I could express properly how moved I am and how captivated and enthralled my children were. We know the book so very well but have been totally blown away by this production.

Please accept our congratulations on a first class performance, the best children’s entertainment I have enjoyed. The cast were superbly professional, engaging with the audience, making the story thoroughly entertaining and believable. The viola music was the icing on the cake!

I just had to email to say how fantastic it was and how much we enjoyed it. Our three year old daughter was enthralled and so were we. I couldn’t imagine how you would translate the book on to the stage…and what you did was beyond my expectations. The actors were fantastic and we loved every minute of it.

I was really curious about how they would be able to put the book on the stage and whoever came up with this adaptation is a genius. The story was really touching and the three actors were brilliant.

I have to say this was one of the best children's theatre I have seen. The kids were mesmerised and loved it! I loved the inclusion of the violin in the story! There was plenty to entertain children and adults alike.

We absolutely loved The Snail and the Whale. It is so incredibly creative and imaginative. Our granddaughters (4 and 5) were entranced from start to finish and joined in well with the fun interactive bits. Spot on Tall Stories - thank you.
