This week 'The Gruffalo' returns to the West End to spend the summer at the Lyric Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue and we have been enjoying playing to lovely audiences so far. We are especially pleased to welcome to the theatre several classes of primary school children who have been given complimentary tickets as part of the show's Free Schools' Tickets Initiative.
The initiative aims to encourage school theatre visits to counteract decreasing funding for arts activities and is aimed as schools with high proportions of pupils eligible for free school meals. As one headteacher has said,
"This is an incredible experience for our children. With tightening school budgets impacting on school provision, it is a real luxury to be able to be our children to the theatre and without this project our children wouldn't have this experience. To bring the children to the buzz of Piccadilly Circus and watch the awe and wonder in their faces as they watch one of their favourite texts coming to life on stage is an experience they will never forget and what a way to start them on an exciting journey to making theatre and the arts a more permanent part of their lives."
We're thrilled to be able to make this happen and would like to say a big thank you to our wonderful friends at Kenny Wax Family Entertainment for all their hard work on the project.
